Mask mandates effective against delta? Not really

The delta wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is winding down in California, with cases and hospitalizations decreasing across the state.

Some California counties — including eight in the Bay Area and some in Los Angeles and Sacramento — implemented new indoor mask mandates in response. Under those mandates, all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, were required to mask up indoors unless actively eating or drinking.

Other California counties did not implement similar restrictions. Below is a breakdown comparing the course of the delta wave in notable California counties, with and without indoor mask mandates. Included are each county’s vaccination rate, the peak number of cases per 100,000 residents, the current case rate, the peak number of hospitalizations per 100,000 residents and the current hospitalization numbers. Though the vaccination rates are current, they reflect countywide trends in vaccination that emerged before the delta surge.

All vaccination numbers come from individual county websites, while case and hospitalization numbers come from the California Department of Public Health.
