Supreme Court sides with churches and goes against Gavin Newsoms Covid-19 restrictions.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court sided with California churches against the Governor of California’s restrictions on indoor worship services. The new restrictions were put into place after new “surges” of Covid-19 cases. Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministries brought forth the legal battle against Gov. Newsom, saying that the Governor’sorders violated the first amendment.

The Gov. restrictions prohibited indoor worships designated to a “tier 1,” which was based on public health conditions. The Tier 1 counties are the counties with the most widespread Covid-19 cases are and have an infection rate of 8%, which caused many other small businesses to close.

This the second time that the Supreme Court has sided with religious groups. It is clear that the first amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” This has been an ongoing battle of Governors targeting religious groups and then the Supreme Court siding in favor with churches/religious groups.
