Weekly coronavirus cases and deaths around the world have been declining since August, according to a World Health Organization report.

“All regions reported a decline in the number of new cases this week apart from the European Region which reported a number similar to that of the previous week,” the report said.

Most regions also showed a large decline in COVID-19 deaths except for the Americas and Europe, which reported a similar number of deaths compared to previous weeks. The Africa region reported the highest decline in weekly deaths.

The U.S. reported the most new coronavirus cases of any country. Still, national infections and hospitalizations are on the decline. The country surpassed a COVID-19 death toll of 700,000 last week.

At the same time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 44% of Americans are not yet fully vaccinated. And with the latest surge on the decline, health officials are urging the unvaccinated to get the shot.

“As these cases come down, the most important thing that we can do is continue to practice the mitigation strategies that we know work,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said last week. “Of course, that’s masking, handwashing, distancing, ventilation – but critically important is vaccination.”
